ChangingThePresent is built on a web architecture that helps us optimize our productivity, performance, cost, and our customer's experience. The hardware, software and hosting are all critical to our success.
The architecture for ChangingThePresent is a traditional Ruby on Rails architecture. We run a cluster of application servers, balance across them, and share only limited resources across those servers--a networked caching layer and the database. We can then load-balance the application, and freely add server resources as our needs increase.
We build ChangingThePresent with open source software. Our database manager is MySQL, deployed in hot standby mode for fail-over. We run Ruby on Rails as our application development framework. Ruby, a high-level language with rapidly rising popularity, is ideal for our purposes as a highly productive language that's proven in the web development space. Rails is one of the most popular frameworks for web-enabled, database-backed applications. Our web servers are Mongrel--for Rails applications--and Apache for static content. We run on the Linux operating system, use Subversion for source control and a variety of Rails plug-ins for testing and code coverage.
