This drive supports the participation of TheBigRunner (Michael Graham) in this race: Hartford Marathon.
For those that don't know, I am planning to run the Hartford Marathon on October 13, 2007. To give myself the extra motivation needed, I thought I would try and help a great cause at the same time. While I am confident I will finish the marathon (knock on wood), the added support will only push me to do it faster. My goal is to break 4 hours with a second goal to beat George W's time of 3:44:52 (this isn't political). Any support is appreciated! -Michael

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer - New York City

Overview

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is the world’s oldest and largest private institution dedicated to prevention, patient care, research, and education in cancer. From its earliest days, MSKCC has devoted unparalleled energy and resources to the effort to control cancer in all its forms. One of MSKCC’s great strengths is the seamless integration of basic and clinical research, which ensures that discoveries in the laboratory are rapidly transferred to patients.

Mission

To offer the best possible treatments for patients with cancer today; to conduct research to discover more effective strategies to diagnose and treat cancer tomorrow; and to train future generations.

Programs

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center consists of Memorial Hospital, the Sloan-Kettering Institute (SKI), and the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. Memorial Hospital, a 425-bed facility, is devoted to cancer care, clinical research, and physician training in oncology. The hallmark of care at Memorial Sloan-Kettering is to provide the most sophisticated treatment and best possible quality of life for patients with cancer and allied diseases. Our physicians emphasize early detection, more precise diagnosis, individually tailored treatment, and concern for the patient as a whole. The Sloan-Kettering Institute is dedicated to advancing the understanding of the biology and management of cancer. SKI carries out ground-breaking laboratory research through eight innovative research programs in Cancer Biology and Genetics, Cell Biology, Computational Biology, Developmental Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Pharmacology and Chemistry, and Structural Biology which are home to a total of 90 laboratories. The Gerstner Sloan-Kettering Graduate School was established to narrow the gap between basic cancer research and clinical applications by training a cadre of gifted young scientists to attack clinical problems through basic and translational research. It offers a PhD program in cancer biology.

Impact

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has devoted more than a century to integrating patient care with an active, vital program of research, resulting in seminal contributions to new and better therapies for the treatment of cancer. We are proud of the progress we have made in the fight against cancer, as well of our extraordinary institution and our staff of more than 9,000 employees. Their dedication, teamwork, and talent make a difference in the lives of our patients today and those we will see in the future.
