Problem

The burning of fossil fuels is the largest contributor to the gases that cause global warming, which include methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide (CO2). However, the clearing of agriculture and associated land also contributes greatly to this problem: one third of all CO2 emissions come from changes in land use (forest clearing, shifting cultivation and intensification of agriculture).

The Gift

Your gift would help remove 35,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere: the equivalent of that which would be created on 6 plane trips across the United States!

How? The microbial communities that exist in organic soils transform carbon from organic debris into biomass, thereby “sequestering" the carbon in the soil rather than in the atmosphere.
Your support of organic farming, through financing from Root Capital (a social investment fund), would help the fields of a coffee farm in Peru accumulate about 1,000 pounds of carbon per acre foot of soil each year. CECOVASA is a Peruvian coffe cooperative located in the Tambopata and Inambari Valleys. These river sheds are located in subtropical forests that are among the most biologically diverse on the planet. CECOVASA has helped make coffee a viable alternative to coca production while protecting forests.
