Problem
Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for more than 1% of all deaths.
More years of life are lost to suicide than to any other single cause except heart disease and cancer.
30,000 Americans commit suicide annually; an additional 500,000 Americans attempt suicide annually.
The Gift
The numbers tell the story. Suicide is a far too common tragedy, yet it is preventable. Sadly, stigma prevents nearly 30 million Americans a year from getting the help they need. NMHA seeks to dramatically reduce the number of completed suicides and suicide attempts each year by increasing awareness of the warning signs of suicide, helping individuals in need recognize that they don’t have to suffer from their illness, and that treatment, whether it is counseling, medication, or a combination of both, can be successful and enable them to lead a healthy life.
Through our National Resource Center, and with the national suicide hotline 800-273-TALK, we are helping individuals in need get the information they need to find a mental health specialist, access treatment, and connect them to other vital services in their community. The Center alone directly serves more than 72,000 individuals and organizations annually.
