The Gulf of California is home to one of the most endangered marine mammals on the planet, the harbor porpoise, or what locals affectionately call la vaquita. Illegal fishing has decimated their numbers to less than 500 in the wild, all located in the Gulf. Your contribution will further efforts to enforce fishing regulations and develop alternative economic opportunities for fishermen in the Gulf of California.

The Gift

Your donation will fund efforts to bring together fishermen, government regulators, and local environmental groups to work together to stop illegal fishing and find new economic alternatives –such as eco-tourism or sustainable fishing—that don’t harm the vaquita. Reducing illegal fishing will not only reduce the numbers of vaquitas killed, but help restore the biodiversity of the Gulf. This region, home to a fantastic array of starfish, dolphins, and giant turtles, has seen a massive loss of marine life due to destructive fishing practices. Your gift will help restore the Gulf of California to her former splendor!
