The Shark Conservation Fund is a collaboration of philanthropists dedicated to restoring ocean health through sweeping shark and ray conservation. Our goal is to help maintain the vibrancy of the world’s oceans by halting the overexploitation of sharks and rays and to prevent extinctions through strategic, collaborative, and catalytic grantmaking. In doing so, we work to protect the world’s marine resources by promoting sustainable policies and robust and enforceable trade regulations.

SCF is uniquely positioned to achieve real and lasting change because we are the only dedicated shark conservation organization with a global strategy to apply positive pressure in an atypical way. We take a comprehensive approach by deploying the full policy cycle – research, regulation, and enforcement. Aimed at achieving systemic change of shark and ray management on a transformative scale, we leverage our strategy to achieve three main objectives:

REGULATE GLOBAL TRADE

Goal: Sustainably regulate the trade of at least 50% of the most commercially valuable species through listing on Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)

PROTECT THE MOST ENDANGERED SPECIES

Goal: Reverse the trend line in shark depletion and global shark health

COMBAT UNSUSTAINABLE FISHING

Goal: Use CITES as the global driver for countries to manage sharks sustainably

Confronting the issue through shark and ray conservation is a catalytic solution to this global problem. Sharks and rays are keystone species that play an essential role in our oceans and coastal communities. As apex predators, sharks and rays stabilize food webs and act as a barometer for ocean health. Fostering healthy shark and ray populations is essential to the creation of healthier ecosystems, which,...
