Educate Young Girls - Food for education

Friends of the World Food Program, Inc.

$60.00

Your gift will provide take-home food rations to girls in school for six months to help ease the economic burden on parents. This will help convince parents to keep their daughters in school and free them from their household chores. This gives girls, who otherwise may stay at home, the chance to learn. By promoting education for girls, the World Food Program (WFP) will improve a woman’s chances of finding well-paid work, raising a healthy family and even preventing the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS. WFP is also helping these girls to achieve economic independence and have a voice within their communities. Education empowers girls and gives them the knowledge and tools they need to improve their lives. It will continue to have positive and long-lasting effects not only for them, but also for their families and their communities. This gift will provide the magic of two new books to a child in need, and help create a foundation of literacy in her life.

$10.00

Your gift will help a woman acquire the skills she needs to develop her career. 5 sessions at a Dress for Success Career Center will provide a woman with career guidance, technology skills and support in her job search. In addition, your gift will provide her with resources that are vital to entering the workforce, such as an Internet-accessible computer lab with cutting-edge job placement software; résumé and cover-letter-writing lessons; and interview preparation.

Your gift will provide supplies for a KaBOOM! Play Day, which brings out an entire community for one day focused on the importance (and fun!) of play. At KaBOOM!, we believe that kids who play are less likely to be obese and develop obesity-related health problems. They also develop the cognitive skills that are positively linked to learning and academic performance. And they also learn confidence and the social skills that help them become happy, well-adjusted adults.

Make your contribution to the “Adopt A Beach” program to help children become “Adopters” through their commitment to clean the beach of their choice in L.A. County, three times a year. Your contribution allows children from under-served communities to not only see the beach, often as first time visitors, but also to learn that environmental stewardship starts at home in their own neighborhoods. Once a location has been selected, Heal the Bay facilitates the Adopt-A-Beach program in Los Angeles county by providing all supplies and training for volunteers to carry out the beach cleanups. A free educational presentation by a member of Heal the Bay’s Speakers Bureau is part of each group’s first cleanup. The speaker explains stormwater pollution issues, how to run a safe cleanup, and the importance of recording on the data cards each item that is picked up for future analysis and reporting, which drives legislation and policy on water quality issues.

$100.00

WLT-US buys real acres in real places and protects them forever. By targeting the highest priority areas and taking these areas off the market for destruction, we can save countless species and critical habitats that are often protected nowhere else. We are highly efficient and able to purchase and protect private lands with rainforest for $100 an acre or less. We focus actions on key areas under imminent threat that often represent the last surviving habitat for threatened species. We then move swiftly to protect these biodiversity treasures before they are lost. World Land Trust-US has protected over 600,000 acres of rainforests and other threatened habitats to protect the most endangered species forever.
