Building Opportunities For Self-Sufficiency
Problem
The homeless children in BOSS shelters and housing programs face many kinds of problems - from learning and developmental disabilities to health and nutrition issues to substance abuse or violence in the family. BOSS operates a unique after-school program with a teacher and volunteers who help the kids with homework, health, behavioral, and family issues. These kids are very low income whose parents do not have money to buy school supplies or enroll them in additional learning activities.
The Gift
This gift will provide backpacks, books, folders and pencils, calculators, and other supplies that all kids need to complete homework, keep up with their peers, and feel 'normal' and supported in the classroom and at home. Assistance provided to kids with this gift include the supplies and materials described here, as well as additional learning support that may be needed to address the kids' learning or developmental disabilities, such as assessments, special instruction, tutoring, or counseling. Homeless kids are at high risk of continuing in a family cycle of homelessness and poverty - this gift will help them escape that cycle by doing well school, building confidence, developing learning and coping skills, identifying their talents, and setting positive goals for their future.
