Restore Kenyan Land
One year of research
World Agroforestry Centre
Problem
Your gift will support land restoration research that will supply the scientific data needed to halt land degradation in Western Kenya. The data will be used starting in 2008 to rehabilitate large sections of the country's most degraded land and halt the collapse of the Lake Victoria ecosystem due to soil erosion and fertilizer contamination.
The Gift
Your gift of $10 will support soil restoration research for a year on one square yard of one of Africa's most fragile ecosystems. Your support will supply the scientific data needed to halt degradation and lead to the planting indigenous tree species, many of which are fast disappearing in Western Kenya. The data generated will be used starting in 2008 to rehabilitate large sections of Kenya's most degraded land and halt the collapse of the Lake Victoria ecosystem due to soil erosion and fertilizer contamination. With the availability of new hi-tech tools, project scientists also plan improve the capacity of local communities to identify opportunities and implement policies that support integrated ecosystem management. This work will involve the planting improved species of trees on degraded land and encourage farmers to make use of new options involving agroforestry.
