People living with Alzheimer’s and caregivers often face an overwhelming number of issues associated with the disease. These may include handling dementia-related behaviors, how to better communicate with the person with Alzheimer’s, assisting with daily needs, safety issues, and where to get local support and resources. The counselor may refer them to a local Alzheimer’s Association chapter or other community resources. A typical situation for Helpline counselors: “After my mom died, my father would ask where she was. Every time I told him she had passed on, he started grieving all over again. Last night I was just at the end of my rope. A friend said to call the Alzheimer’s Association.”

To ensure that each animal who gets adopted has the best possible chance of remaining healthy and happy in his or her new home, ASPCA veterinarians offer specialized care and treatment for all of the animals in our shelter. Our medical staff tests each animal for a variety of illnesses—to protect their health, as well as the health of all the animals in our shelter. Adoptable animals also receive all required vaccinations. Your gift will provide veterinary care for a dog or cat awaiting adoption in our shelter. When that animal finds his forever home, he’ll already have the foundation of good health. Thanks for making that glorious beginning happen!

Your gift will help one teacher or science center educator get the resources they need to teach others about global warming by sponsoring their attendance at one of Clean Air Cool-Planet’s Climate Change Backpack trainings. These day-long forums offer educators an opportunity to learn about valuable climate teaching tools, ask questions, and network with their peers. Specifically, they focus on the Climate Change Backpack, recommended by NASA’s Earth Science Education Division for earth science teachers and informal educators. The Backpack contains interactive activities, lesson plans and “props" that can be used to engage children of different ages in learning about global warming. By giving a teacher the gift of this day-long training, you are really helping educate young people about the greatest challenge they will face in their lifetimes.

Box-Out raises money for the Community Empowerment Fund (CEF), which offers savings opportunities, micro-loans, financial education, and assertive support to individuals who are underemployed and unemployed. Each Box-Out Sponsorship goes DIRECTLY to CEF, meeting clients' needs on an individual basis. Box-Out is a UNC-CH event during which students get sponsored to sleep in the Pit in cardboard boxes for a night, raising awareness of issues of homelessness while raising money for CEF. Your gift will pay for one hour of a researcher's time to build on current efforts to address sustainability issues in palm oil, cotton, soy, sugar, coffee and other commodities by looking across commodities. The research will determine the key impacts that matter most for water, soil, biodiversity, toxicity and greenhouse gas emissions and find indicators to measure them.
