OK, guys and gals! Look at my noble picture above. (No, it’s not a selfie). Can you imagine me wearing a holiday sweater with reindeer or snowmen? Sheesh.

I didn’t help found this great country in order to have its fortunes spent on silly, unwanted, and unneeded birthday and holiday presents: meaningless mugs, pen & pencil sets, bathrobes, picture frames, vases, and all that.

You and your loved ones probably don’t want more of that stuff, either.

There is a growing trend, and I hope you join it. You don’t need to buy stuff to show your love. Instead, make a charitable donation in a friend’s name. This nonprofit site, www.ChangingThePresent.org, makes it feel like a great gift. You can even send a beautiful, personalized greeting card to make it especially memorable.

See my wish list below.

Browse the site to find great gifts for all your friends and loved ones, no matter what their favorite cause, nonprofit, or school.

Be sure to create your own wish list, too!

BVES has also gained the release of thousands of child soldiers, whom BVES houses and feeds while working to reunite these children with their families. Your gift will help pay for much-needed gasoline so that BVES staff can travel to towns all over eastern Congo -- a large, dangerous and volatile region -- to get former child soldiers home.

Building on lessons from service in four wars, Veterans for America galvanizes new war veterans nationwide, creating an empowered community and space to share common experiences. We raise awareness about challenges facing returning veterans and promote common-sense solutions. Our website and community blogs provide an active atmosphere to share experiences among those who understand their challenges. Veterans For America’s website serves as a unique portal and resource to Government and private resources. Our daily news updates provide critical information specific to veterans’ needs, such as developments in healthcare and Veterans For America legislative initiatives. Your gift of $25 will allow us to reach out and distribute timely information to 100 returning war veterans, welcoming them home to the Veterans for America community. Please help provide information enabling our returning combat veterans to find a safe space to share their stories and make their voices heard.

We must have everyone’s support to stop Congress from handing the home of polar bears and other wildlife over to Big Oil, which will only result in a savings of a penny at the gas pump…and that’s in 20 years! Your gift to Adopt A Polar Bear will help Defenders save polar bears and other imperiled Arctic wildlife.

Educate Young Girls - Food for education

Friends of the World Food Program, Inc.

$60.00

Your gift will provide take-home food rations to girls in school for six months to help ease the economic burden on parents. This will help convince parents to keep their daughters in school and free them from their household chores. This gives girls, who otherwise may stay at home, the chance to learn. By promoting education for girls, the World Food Program (WFP) will improve a woman’s chances of finding well-paid work, raising a healthy family and even preventing the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS. WFP is also helping these girls to achieve economic independence and have a voice within their communities. Education empowers girls and gives them the knowledge and tools they need to improve their lives. It will continue to have positive and long-lasting effects not only for them, but also for their families and their communities. To learn more about what WFP and WFP USA are doing to end world hunger, please visit www.wfpusa.org

House A Veteran - 2 hours of advocacy

National Coalition for Homeless Veterans

$75.00

This gift will provide 2 hours of NCHV staff work with developers and funders of affordable housing for veterans with mental and physical disabilities, and low income veterans who have completed their transitional programs. Creating housing opportunities for these veterans is a new frontier in the homeless veteran assistance community. Indeed, it is the success of the nation's transitional housing assistance programs that has focused national attention on this issue. Many veterans who complete transitional programs cannot afford housing at market rates. Working with innovative developers, financial institutions, service providers, the Corporation for Supportive Housing, and government officials, NCHV is engaged in partnerships exploring the incentives and rewards of creating affordable and supportive housing stock in several market areas. At the same time, many NCHV organizations are addressing this need through program initiatives that include creation of supportive and low income housing units.

Open A Door - One door handle

Homes for Our Troops

$25.00

Your gift will provide one specialized door handle for an injured veteran. These lever-type door handles eliminate the need to grasp the handle tightly to open a door.

Support Veterans - Development for women

National Coalition for Homeless Veterans

$100.00

This gift will provide 2 staff hours of work in support of women veterans' programs. Development of programs designed to help women is more critical now than at any other time in U.S. history. Historically, the VA has not had to provide services for women in the numbers that are presenting themselves because of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Approximately 4% of the homeless veterans in VA programs are women. That percentage doubles in community-based programs that serve homeless veterans. Women have special health care needs; many have dependent children. Many women veterans have experienced sexual trauma during their military service and do not seek assistance from VA facilities. NCHV is involved in supporting efforts to provide special programs that address the needs of women veterans -- the fastest growing segment of the homeless veteran population -- both in VA and community-based programs.

A donation of $97 will fund an entire year of school for a Ugandan child in an IDP camp. Education has a positive impact on not only the future earning potential of a child but also helps reduce vulnerability to health problems such as HIV/AIDS, increases awareness of human rights and issues such as family planning and improves confidence and overall well being.
BRAC is already providing Northern Uganda's IDP camp children with the opportunity for education in specially designed schools that are suitable for older children. These schools follow BRAC's unique, interactive approach to education which makes learning a fun experience for students and prepares them to be mainstreamed into the government’s schools. The first class of BRAC learners (aged 10-12 years old) recently graduated from Grade 1, and 844 passed their exams and have been mainstreamed into the government schools.

Your gift will provide 25 children in an afterschool program with brand new books.
