Adopt-A-Minefield

Overview

Adopt-A-Minefield® (AAM) helps save lives and rebuild communities by raising funds for mine clearance and survivor assistance (together, mine action), and by raising awareness about the landmine issue.

AAM is a campaign of the United Nations Association of the USA, which engages individuals, community groups, and businesses in the United Nations effort to resolve the global landmine crisis.

Mission

To engage individuals, community groups, and businesses in the United Nations’ effort to resolve the global landmine crisis.

Program

AAM’s activities have directly benefited nearly 400,000 people by funding the clearance of minefields in their communities or the provision of services, such as physical or professional rehabilitation, through local survivor assistance programs. AAM has also indirectly benefited millions more people by clearing routes to allow the return of refugees and internally displaced people, clearing access for humanitarian workers carrying food and water, clearing major infrastructure such as electrical grids or irrigation systems to provide energy or water to entire regions and by clearing agricultural land or factories to provide jobs to a larger population.

Impact

By removing the remnants of war, Adopt-A-Minefield fuels renewed hope and dreams to thousands of men, women and children.

AAM has raised nearly $18.5 million for mine action; cleared over 21 million square meters of land; funded 29 mine clearance and survivor assistance organizations; cleared minefields in more than 150 villages from seven mine impacted countries; mobilized tens of thousands of people worldwide to support its efforts.

Adopt-A-Minefield has supported canine demining teams in Afghanistan since 2001. AAM developed the “Adopt-A-Team" program. With cluster bombs scattered throughout the country and the increased movement of people, mine clearance priorities are now in constant flux. Adopt-A-Team enables deminers to respond to emergencies, giving them the flexibility they need.
