International Bridges to Justice
Problem
Every day throughout the world, citizens are arbitrarily detained, tortured and denied access to a fair trial. In many developing countries, governments have demonstrated their commitment to human rights by signing international conventions and implementing domestic laws to safeguard citizen rights. Unfortunately, many of the new laws remain unenforced due to lack of trained lawyers, resources and awareness.
The Gift
In countries where human rights are often violated, legal aid plays a crucial role: the most decisive indicator of the reduction of abuse and torture is the early presence of a defense attorney. By actively working with local legal aid offices and lawyers, we can prevent human rights abuses from ever happening. 20 IBJ-authored legal aid reference booklets will go to 20 legal aid offices, providing local lawyers with useful guidelines on criminal defense procedures. Your donation will directly help them increase their ability to carry out competent representation when defending the accused.
