Problem
On average, children with serious illness spend about half the amount of time in the classroom as their healthy peers. Our programs work to fill this educational void. Currently, children can spend time in hospitals almost every week, yet never meet Illinois’ requirements to qualify for much needed tutoring. Snow City Arts addresses these children’s developmental and educational needs—and we do so by using the arts as a springboard for learning.
The Gift
Your gift will help support our Visual Arts Workshop that teaches children art history, drawing and painting techniques, photography skills, digital imaging, filmmaking and much needed hands-on computer experience. In these workshops children learn to identify core artistic building blocks such as line, shape, perspective, color theory, and space. They learn principles of repetition and pattern and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion, and pictoral representation. Each child that participates in our Visual Arts Workshops works one-on-one with our artists-in-residence, or if they wish, in smaller groups. Most workshops are conducted at bedside, while patients are also able to work in Snow City Arts’ Idea Labs – our creative resource centers located directly on each pediatric unit. Help us ensure that hospitalized children have access to arts education that is learning-based, engaging, and has a lasting impact.
