Creative Capital celebrates the critical role that artists play in fostering dynamic communities and believes that they deserve support similar to that available to innovators in other sectors. As a national organization that supports artists working in all disciplines, Creative Capital honors the creative process with strategic interventions at key moments in the development of an art project. We have worked with thousands of artists through our grantmaking and professional development programs.

Creative Capital is a permanent laboratory for the development of adventurous and imaginative ideas. The organization seeks to discover and rediscover artists whose work is provocative, timely, and relevant and who are at a critical moment of creative and/or professional growth.

Creativity has become an increasingly valuable resource, not just in the United States but around the world. Just as business, technology, and science sustain their most innovative individuals, Creative Capital is dedicated to nurturing the creativity offered by artists all across the United States. Influenced by fields as diverse as microfinance and mutual aid societies, we have built a comprehensive approach to the development of artists so that they may inspire others with their inventiveness and originality.

As a permanent laboratory for creative workers, Creative Capital is driven by four tenets: support the work; support the artist; nurture the artist community; and engage the public. Highlights of our program include multi-faceted financial support (pools of money available to the artists at different points in the development of their work), retreats that introduce artists to dozens of arts professionals, skills-building opportunities, and promotional support. Through the integration of these strategies, we can create a chain of opportunity for artists. While our services are systematized, we serve artists in a way that is as innovative and individualistic as they are themselves, and those who achieve financial success give back to support their fellow artists.

Creative freedom is integral to a civil society, and artists provide communities with alternative ways to view, hear, and interpret all that goes on around them. Creative Capital artists often use their creative practice to engage and highlight the experiences of populations who are underrepresented politically, economically and socially. Among other pursuits, our grantees have: engaged with neighborhoods around the issue of gentrification and development; collaborated with environmentalists through public art projects that preserve the beauty and ecological balance of landscapes; and questioned how history is constructed and who has the authority to construct it.
