Overview

Equality Now was founded in 1992 to work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. Through its Women’s Action Network of concerned groups and individuals around the world, Equality Now mobilizes public pressure against human rights violations against women. Issues of concern to Equality Now include rape, domestic violence, female genital mutilation, trafficking in women, and the denial of reproductive rights and political participation.

Mission

Equality Now works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through mobilization of public pressure. Organizational objectives include campaigning for reform of discriminatory laws and practices, contributing towards the global campaign to end violence against women, and promoting the equal partnership of women in decision-making.

Program

Equality Now works to achieve its mission through four program areas. The Justice and Equality Program addresses the organization’s goal of reforming discriminatory laws and practices, promoting reproductive rights, and bringing justice and equality to women and girls. The Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Program calls for an end to FGM and supports grassroots organizations working for an end to this harmful traditional practice in their communities. Through the Trafficking Program, Equality Now seeks to end the commercial sexual exploitation of women and girls who suffer human rights violations as commodities of the trade in human beings. The International Peace and Security Program promotes the equal partnership of women in decision-making and the inclusion of women in conflict resolution and the maintenance of peace.

The action arm of Equality Now’s programs is the Women’s Action Network, made up of more than 30,000 members in 160 countries. Members of this network take action by protesting human rights violations against women and girls and raising awareness about these abuses within their own communities. Their actions help Equality Now achieve its goals of mobilizing public pressure and advocating for equality on behalf of women and girls around the world.

Impact

The advocacy work of Equality Now is aimed at creating systemic change that will enable women and girls around the world to fully enjoy their civil, political and economic rights. Since Equality Now’s campaigns are designed to effect profound change at many levels of society, they often require intensive efforts sustained over long periods of time. The long-term impact of these campaigns has the potential to positively affect the lives of thousands of women and reverse the statistics we encounter each day concerning the pervasive abuse, degradation and enslavement of women occurring in every part of the world.
