Overview

The Global Youth Action Network (GYAN) helps young people work together to solve the world's problems. GYAN connects many thousands of organizations in over 180 countries, incubating global partnerships and creating opportunities for young people's voices to be heard in shaping the future. We are a youth-led organization connecting up a global movement of our peers.

Mission

To support youth participation and inter-generational partnership in global decision-making; facilitate strategic collaborations among diverse youth organizations; and create support and recognition for positive youth action that improves their communities and countries.

Program

Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), a project of Youth Service America with the Global Youth Action Network as its key partner: the world's largest annual celebration of young volunteers, which mobilizes millions of young people in 120 countries each April.

The Local Jam supports collaboration among local organizers at the city level. Local Jams in Sao Paulo and New York map thousands of organizations, host monthly gatherings and retreats, forming alliances that improve youth civic engagement.

GYAN supports youth participation in decision-making processes, including those at the United Nations, World Bank’s Youth, World Trade Organization and other fora.

The $1,000 Global Youth Action Awards are offered to the best youth-initiated projects that create a measurable and positive impact in their community.

GYAN seeks to leverage its work, and those of other youth-serving organizations, categorizing its programs in a 5-Level Model for Effective Youth Organizing. This model, developed by the management team, is based on nine years of organizing experience and integral theory (Ken Wilber).

Impact

Helped support record levels of official youth representation at the United Nations, and established Youth Advisory Councils for the United Nations Population Fund, and the League of Arab States, and developed a strategy for engaging youth in achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Helped to launch/incubate such initiatives as the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA), the Ad-Hoc Committee on Youth & the MDGs, the World Youth Movement for Democracy, and others.

Partnered with TakingITGlobal to create the most active youth organizing community on the web, with 1.4m hits a day.
