Overview

IDE envisions all farmers as participants in the global marketplace and implements strategic interventions that facilitate this participation. The history of development efforts has shown that the distribution of finite economic aid is not a viable, long-term approach to ending poverty. Instead, IDE ensures long-term sustainability for its projects by making the rural poor the prime facilitators and investors in their own economic success.

Our activities integrate income generation programs with projects that improve the overall quality of life for poor rural customers. IDE develops low-cost versions of existing technologies, such as drip irrigation and treadle pumps, to make them extremely affordable for the rural poor. We then enhance supply chains to deliver these technologies to farmers, and we facilitate a sustainable supply and demand system. In addition, IDE develops low-cost drinking water filters and simple latrines that allow villagers to make important strides in improving household sanitation and health.

Mission

IDE confronts the challenge of rural poverty by developing sustainable solutions that serve poor women and men, enabling them to access clean water, increase production, create wealth, and improve their quality of life.

We believe in the right of poor women and men to a secure livelihood.

We believe that markets can be a powerful force for poverty reduction.

We listen to and learn from the people we work with.

We value innovation and entrepreneurship.

We have confidence in our ability to make a significant difference.

History

IDE was founded in 1981 to provide subsistence farmers with affordable technologies and connections to markets. These two dimensions of IDE's work allow small farmers to grow enough food to feed their families and generate additional income from the sale of their crops. Over our 26 year history, IDE has significantly increased the income of more than 3.5 million families, or approximately 17 million individuals. Our vision over the next fifteen years is to mobilize support from our global partners to help an additional 30 million individuals out of poverty.

Program

IDE’s multi-dimensional approach consists of the following steps:

1) Extensive research to determine access to, and strength of existing or potential markets

2) Adaptation of affordable technologies to access and store water for irrigation

3) Enhancement of existing supply chains

4) On-going training of farmers, suppliers and buyers at the village level

5) Establishment of linkages between farmers and prospective markets

Impact

Over the last 26 years, impact studies have clearly demonstrated the widespread benefits of IDE’s work. A one year investment of approximately $250 made by IDE in one farm family, coupled with an additional $200 invested by the family themselves over a period of two years, enables the family to, on average, double its income in the first year alone.
