Overview

PeaceTones (an initiative of InternetBar.Org) assists artists in developing nations to help their local communities. PeaceTones is operating in nearly a dozen countries, with two albums published and available for purchase online. We start local artists in setting up online businesses and publish and disseminate their work throughout the world. 90% of all revenues go to the musicians and their community’s goal.

Mission

Simple idea – use the availability of cultural intellectual property (music and art which can be easily digitized) in developing areas to generate money for community development and peace building where the artists live. Integral to the PeaceTones project is the development of a new found respect for the rule of law; pro-bono lawyers of InternetBar’s Legal Empowerment Network help draft contracts which protect artists’ rights and revenues online.

History

3 Finished CDs

Sierra Leone: This collection features music from artists in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The proceeds from the sale of the collection will go to the JR Foundation, a non-profit devoted to providing educational opportunities to children in Freetown.

Brazil: The collection contains Rap, Hip-Hop, and poetry from Recife, one of the most violent places in the world that is not currently an official war zone. The kids from Recife have crafted a series of hopeful messages in their music, and the proceeds from their collection will go to fund a community center and recording studio in Recife.

Ghana: The Akaa Project, a US-based nonprofit organization, was established to assist needy families in a village in the eastern region of Ghana. These families are cooperatively engaged in transforming their village through building a school and community center. They recorded this music to help that cause.

Impact

Your donations to PeaceTones directly impact the lives of people in regions where economic opportunity is severely limited. You are helping spread the promise of economic growth and the alleviation of poverty. In addition, you can join online networks throughout the world which are supporting the PeaceTones and receive music, merchandise, concert tickets and more! Best of all, unlike any other poverty alleviation opportunity, PeaceTones musicians and artists have their own online businesses; as a result 90% of the revenues go to them and their communities. We hope you enjoy the talents of our artists, as well as the impact of your contributions.
