See our GiftsOverview
SAHF is a 501(c)(3) membership organization comprised of not-for-profit organizations who own rental units affordable to approximately 70,000 low-income households in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. SAHF’s seven members are Mercy Housing; National Affordable Housing Trust; National Church Residences; NHT/Enterprise; Preservation of Affordable Housing; Retirement Housing Foundation; and Volunteers of America. A defining characteristic of SAHF’s members is their commitment to long-term, sustainable ownership and continued affordability.
Mission
Each of SAHF's members is committed to the acquisition and long-term ownership of affordable rental housing. SAHF's members believe that the goal of ownership is to provide well-maintained rental homes that remain affordable over the long-term. Such homes provide essential stability for low-wage, low-income families, the elderly, and disabled individuals.
Program
SAHF supports the work of its members in a number of ways: by promoting policies that enable them to acquire and own affordable housing; by facilitating peer-to-peer interaction, and; by pursuing innovative financing mechanisms. SAHF’s peer groups focus on resident services, energy efficiency, financial operations, and asset management. SAHF’s policy work is focused primarily on educating lawmakers and regulators regarding the effects of laws, rules, and administrative practices that undermine its members’ ownership goal — specifically, operations that are sustainable over the long-term so as to provide maximum stability for low-income renters, and renewed and continuing affordability.
Impact
SAHF was launched in 2003. Since that time, its members have developed or preserved approximately 13,000 affordable rental homes. Through 2008, SAHF’s member expect to provide an additional 8,000 affordable apartments in communities across the nation. These apartments will serve low-wage working families and disabled individuals, low-income seniors, and formerly homeless men and women.

Basic Needs
Regular price $2500 $25.00
Private underwriting of a small percentage of the cost can flip the financial calculus. Here’s how it works: Your donation pays for one solar cell, which makes up part of an array. With the purchase of enough cells, SAHF will leverage your donations, and the prepayment of a modest percentage of the cost will allow a SAHF member property to support the rest of the...
Regular price $30000 $300.00
Your gift provides the difference between a low-efficiency washing machine and a higher-efficiency washing machine that may save about 40% on both electricity and water use over its lifetime. This gift not only helps the family who uses the appliance reduce their utility bills, it also helps the environment and spurs the development of green technology. Note that your $300 will be pooled with other...
Regular price $2000 $20.00
Many of SAHF’s members offer these books and toys, as well as safe and fun community play spaces, at the properties they manage for children of families who live there. More resources are always needed. Your gift will add books and toys to a package that SAHF will then donate to a member project and the children they serve. Reading is truly a gift; let’s...
Regular price $1000 $10.00
It’s simple: When we leverage your donation and buy in bulk, $10 is enough to pay for and install four compact fluorescent light bulbs, which makes a significant impact. Taken together, small donations will install this technology throughout thousands of apartment buildings, including common areas and workspaces, drastically reducing energy usage by making everyday lighting cleaner and greener. And by purchasing these light bulbs you...
Regular price $500 $5.00
Nonprofit housing providers can borrow private funds to implement energy efficiency measures only if they can document the savings to be anticipated as a result of the improvements. A contribution of $5 will enable SAHF's members to purchase data gathering for one meter (one property), laying the groundwork for energy-efficient rehabilitation that will benefit residents and reduce the carbon footprint of the building in question.
Regular price $5,00000 $5,000.00
Your gift will enable a SAHF member to assess the energy efficiency of an affordable apartment building as part of a SAHF pilot project. Without a professional assessment, a nonprofit owner cannot raise the funds for energy and cost savings measures. SAHF's pilot projects will set patterns for affordable housing, identify the regulatory barriers to energy-efficiency investments, and provide the basis for SAHF's policy recommendations...
Regular price $10000 $100.00
Your gift will enable a low-income, elderly resident to have greater control over the energy usage in her apartment, contributing to reduced energy costs for her and freeing up income for other basic needs.
