Overview

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as an independent, not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and genetic research. The Foundation supports scientists at top universities and academic medical centers worldwide conducting the most advanced and promising breast cancer research that will lead to prevention and a cure in our lifetime. A minimum of 85 cents of each dollar donated to the Foundation goes directly to breast cancer research and awareness programs. In October 2007, $32 million was awarded to 151 scientists across the United States and in Canada, Latin America, the Middle East, and throughout Europe. Money magazine named BCRF one of America’s eight top charities. And for the sixth consecutive year, BCRF received Charity Navigator’s highest rating, four stars, thus outperforming over 99% of the evaluated charities. The BCRF is the only breast cancer organization in the U.S. to receive this accolade.

Mission

The mission of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and genetic research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health.

History

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and genetic research.

Program

Since its inception, BCRF has raised more than $190 million - $35 million in fiscal 2007 alone - to support clinical and genetic research at medical institutions around the globe. At this time our grants are supporting 150 dedicated researchers at major medical institutions worldwide. These grants support advanced and promising breast cancer research that will help lead to prevention and a cure in our lifetime.

Impact

A number of major advances in breast cancer treatment announced over the past two years - including the impact of the drugs Herceptin and Avastin, and the positive effects of a low-fat diet, all of which are reducing the recurrence of breast cancer - were made possible in part by grants from BCRF.
