Problem

Premarin, a drug derived from pregnant mares’ urine (PMU), is prescribed to alleviate symptoms of menopause and to prevent osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. But the horses used to produce this drug undergo unnecessary stress and pain. Mares are strapped to urine collection bags 6 months a year; when no longer able to reproduce, they are sold for slaughter. The majority of the foals who are born as “by-products" of the industry end up in slaughterhouses.

The Gift

The ASPCA is committed to helping some of the thousands of Premarin foals born every year, and the thousands of PMU mares made redundant by recent drastic production cuts in the industry. As such, we provide grants to support the work of several dedicated individuals and organizations who are trying to save as many of these Premarin foals as possible. Your gift will rescue a Premarin foal from inhumane conditions and eventual slaughter, and will cover costs for one year of care at an equine sanctuary. A horse's life saved -- thanks to you.
