Problem

CPJ documents hundreds of attacks annually against journalists including death threats, physical assaults. Since 2001, CPJ has helped more than 125 journalists to safe havens whose lives or physical safety were in danger because of their reporting. Journalists going into exile must abandon their possessions, homes, respected positions, and families and start anew in a foreign country. In many countries around the world, the most veteran journalists lack the means to support themselves in exile.

The Gift

In addition to broad advocacy for at-risk journalists, CPJ provides financial support for journalists in extreme and imminent danger to go into exile. A modest contribution can go very far in many countries and enable journalists to seek safety. You can help support journalists threatened for their work in exile until it is safe for them to return home or until they can secure asylum and the right to work in another country. Your gift of $200 will be matched by CPJ to cover the costs of two to four-month stays in exile for a journalist and possibly their family, depending on the region. While CPJ advocates on behalf of any journalist attacked for their work, your contribution will support only the families of journalists where CPJ has ascertained funds can be delivered legally, safely and reliably and will have a significant impact on the journalist and their family.
