Support A Journalist
2 family prison visits
Committee to Protect Journalists
CPJ documents dozens of cases annually worldwide of journalists imprisoned for their work, such as that of Jiang Weiping of China, accused of “revealing state secrets” and inciting to subvert state power.” These journalists’ “crimes” were merely exposing corruption, environmental degradation, human rights abuses by powerful officials, publishing diverse or critical views not sanctioned by their governments, and assisting foreign correspondents on issues of global importance such as terrorism and the war in Iraq.
In addition to broad advocacy for the release of journalists unjustly imprisoned, CPJ provides financial support for the families of imprisoned journalists. A modest contribution can go very far in many countries, enabling family members to visit their loved ones and bring them essential food and medicine. Your gift of $100 will sponsor two visits by a family member, or provide for basic necessities for an imprisoned journalist and their family for one month. In some countries your gift will go further and help secure the release of a journalist in prison by underwriting the costs of filing a legal appeal or application for parole. While CPJ advocates on behalf of any journalist imprisoned for their work, your contribution will support only the families of journalists where CPJ has ascertained funds can be delivered legally, safely and reliably, and will have a significant impact on the journalist and their family.
