Problem

As newspapers cut back staff due to ad revenue loss, a huge hole has developed in investigative journalism, and particularly on women’s issues. Former investigative reporters that were attached to major newspapers are now freelancing. Feminist writers, photojournalists, and investigative reporters need a trusted outlet for their critical work telling women’s stories, exposing corruption, and speaking truth to power.

The Gift

Ms. is in a position to fill this gap of solid investigative reporting. With limited resources, Ms. has been successful in breaking investigative news. For example, in Spring 2006, Ms. sent an investigative team to the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands to expose the sweatshop conditions for women workers and put a woman’s face on Jack Abramoff’s scandalous lobbying. Ms. sparked renewed action and coverage on the exploitation of these women. New legislation was introduced to reform labor and immigration laws in the Marianas, and women’s groups organized actions as a result of this investigative work. Both nationally and globally, Ms. is determined to be on the frontlines investigating breaking stories or stories that have not yet come to the attention of the public. Your gift of $75, together with the gifts of 99 other contributors, covers the cost of one groundbreaking Ms. Investigative Report.
