Often domestic violence survivors have not been given many choices in their lives. Their impulses have been controlled by another person. Through a collaborative workshop environment in which participants follow a series of movement exercises, this program is designed to help these survivors with issues of choice, autonomy, self-expression, trust and sharing.
This gift will provide round-trip subway fare to a shelter so that we can introduce women to our program. This year alone, through our current partnerships, we have been able to enter twenty shelters throughout the five boroughs of New York City and provide 250 workshops for women, reaching 12-15 women participants per workshop. Transportation to and from the shelter is a crucial starting point. We plan and design workshops that underscore clinical themes, that help to solve problems or address difficult group dynamics, and that provide specific tools to meet specific needs. Workshops vary greatly in response to the needs of clients but they all facilitate communication while fostering an understanding of how movement reflects their emotions and reactions.
