Landmines and other explosive items injure or kill thousands of people each year. In addition, their presence prevents farmers from planting their fields or grazing their livestock. Mined roads and paths block trade and safe access to water. Aid agencies are hesitant to visit mined areas to implement health and education projects. Landmines leave rural populations mired in a continuous cycle of poverty.
A gift of $5 will sponsor a HALO deminer for one day's work. Using his or her metal detector, a typical deminer will clear 250 square feet of hazardous ground per day. HALO currently fields nearly 8,000 mine clearance staff around the world. This work not only removes deadly landmines and items of unexploded ordnance from the ground but also provides employment in war-ravaged communities.
