Problem

There are between 15,000-20,000 new landmine casualties each year. The majority of casualties (81 percent) are civilians. In 2005 alone, 1,518 children were killed or harmed by landmines. Landmine survivors are among the most impoverished groups in every society and often do not access to the most basic needs. Most healthcare, rehabilitation and socioeconomic services are located in urban centres, far away from the mine-affected rural areas where the majority of mine survivors live.

The Gift

Your gift will be used to support mine victim associations so that they may raise their voices and demands that their rights be respected within their country. While emergency care is indeed vital to a mine victim, it is only a first step. Survivors not only confront a long recovery process characterized by physical suffering and mental grief, but they often suffer the pain of losing their jobs and the ability to support their families. Your donation will help mine victim associations advocate for assistance programmes that meet all the needs of survivors, such as care and rehabilitation, as well social and economic reintegration into society.
