Problem

In today’s increasingly interdependent world, it’s critical that we have the tools to understand each other across social, cultural, and economic divides. However, the language barriers that many journalists face on assignment can often hinder their efforts to provide the most accurate and in-depth coverage.

The Gift

According to the code of ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists, “public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of modern democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues." When encountering language or cultural barriers on assignment, journalists must rely on the expertise of interpreters to help them navigate their way – sometimes into the heart of a story, and sometimes out of harm’s way. Your financial support will enable PRI to provide our journalists around the globe with the most qualified and experienced translators and interpreters to assist them in providing audiences with the insights to better understand ourselves and the world.
