The MacDowell Colony
Help support an educational dialogue between talented artists working in all disciplines and local children and adults. Bringing their work-in-progress to classrooms and organizations in the community, MacDowell artists provide a direct experience of contemporary art and creativity to students and adult audiences alike. There are too few interactions that allow children to understand what it means to be an artist and give artists a direct connection with their audience.
Many artists-in-residence volunteer to present current work to community members in a relaxed and informal setting. MacDowell's outreach programs mirror the “open studios" held at the Colony. Through MacDowell in the Schools, your support provides students with opportunities to meet talented artists and explore their evolving ideas about the process and creation of new art that happens daily at MacDowell. “We’ve been delighted to have MacDowell Colonists come here. They all provided very profound experiences. And what the artists might not realize is there is carry-over into other kinds of projects. The artists get them thinking, get them to try things they haven’t, and then the presentations are used by teachers to extend the grade-school curriculum." --Susan Copley, Peterborough Elementary School principal
