Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa

Overview

FARA is the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, an apex organization bringing together and forming coalitions of major stakeholders in agricultural research and development in Africa. FARA complements the innovative activities of national, international and sub-regional research institutions to deliver more responsive and effective services to its stakeholders and plays advocacy and coordination roles for agricultural research for development in Africa.

Mission

To enhance and add value to the effectiveness and efficiency of agricultural research systems in Africa that will contribute to agricultural development, economic growth and sustainable use of natural resources.

Program

Sub-Saharan Africa Challenge Programme (SSA CP): to promote the new innovation systems approach to agricultural research for development where all actors in the production to consumption chain are involved in developing research agenda.

Regional Agricultural Information and Learning System (RAILS): to empower all stakeholders with information and learning tools so that they can innovate with confidence and compete in knowledge-based economies.

Strengthening Capacity for Agricultural Research for Development (SCARDA): to strengthen Africa’s capacity for more relevant agricultural research and development.

Institutional Capacities (BASIC) program: to strengthen the capacity of African universities to build the capacity in Africa required for endogenously-driven innovation systems.

Dissemination of New Agricultural Technologies in Africa (DONATA): to improve the dissemination and adoption of new research and farmer-derived technologies that can make a difference in the lives of the African farmers.

African Biosafety and Biotechnology Initiative (ABBI): to establish biosafety systems through developing sustainable African strategy on biosafety; creating enabling conditions for biotech application; establishing mechanism to facilitate harmonization of regulatory systems and to create public awareness; and strengthening African capacity for effective participation in international negotiations or regulation development.

Impact

By 2015, we are to raise rural incomes in real terms by 50%; to reduce food costs in real terms for poor families by 50%; to reduce numbers in need of food relief by 75%; and to reduce natural resource degradation by 50% as measured by soil erosion, water sedimentation and biodiversity indicators.

Irrigation system

Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa

Your donation will be used to help farmers harvest water that is available to them. A simple irrigation system connecting their farms to major rivers is enough to double their productivity. This gift will be used to improve the knowledge to maintain water catchment areas, where water is stored during heavy rain and used at a later stage to irrigate farmer’s fields. Your gift will...

Biosafety posters

Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa

Your donation will be used to assist farmers in getting access to biotechnology products developed by researchers. It will support an initiative by scientists, farmers and policy makers to develop biosafety systems in Africa. African governments will then be guided on which biotechnology tools and products will work under what circumstances to increase farmer’s productivity. The gift visualizes the efforts scientists and researchers are making...
