Overview

The National Housing Trust is committed to safeguarding affordable housing and improving the quality of life for the families and elderly who live there. Throughout the country, millions of apartments that are affordable for America’s working families and elderly are deteriorating or being converted to more expensive housing. The National Housing Trust raises money to acquire and revitalize these apartments, so residents are not forced to leave their homes.

Mission

The National Housing Trust preserves and revitalizes affordable apartments to better the quality of life for the families and elderly who live there. Preserving existing affordable housing is the essential first step in solving our nation’s housing dilemma.

Program

In addition to acquiring and renovating affordable housing, the National Housing Trust enhances residents’ lives through resident services. Programs focus on providing families tools and resources to pursue a better life. For children, the National Housing Trust provides after school tutoring and homework assistance and fun activities, such as arts and crafts fairs, so that working parents can rest assured their children are supervised and continue to learn long after the school day ends. Adults have opportunities to improve their education and professional skills through job training programs, English lessons or GED classes. At many of our properties, the National Housing Trust intends to create a computer learning center where children and adults alike can build the computer skills that are required to succeed in the workplace or classroom.

Impact

The National Housing Trust ensures that low income families and elderly can remain in safe and stable housing. The Trust has preserved and revitalized nearly 3,000 affordable apartments in 6 states and the District of Columbia. The National Housing Trust ensures that low income families and elderly can remain in safe and stable housing. Without quality affordable housing, America’s working families do not have the foundation upon which to pursue their dreams.
