Your gift will provide a solar lantern for a rural house, which provides two hours of light every night for two years. Barefoot solar engineers trained by the Barefoot College fabricate and maintain solar lanterns used to provide light in their communities. Your donation will educate one child for 1 year in night school. The Barefoot College began Night Schools for the children of the working poor in 1975 to provide an education that draws on the knowledge of the community. Literate young men and women in the community are selected and trained for 6 months to become Barefoot Teachers. By providing the learning environment of the Night Schools, by providing drinking water through rain water harvesting at the schools , or by providing solar lighting instead of kerosene lamps, and giving a sense of security, mothers start to send their girls to school for the first time. Since 1975, over 50,000 children have studied at these Night Schools -- and the concept of the Night Schools has been replicated in 16 states in India.

Your gift of $30 dollars allows us to send packages of two donated books from our library to ten prisoners - a total of twenty books. Anecdotal evidence shows that books in prison are read by up to 25 people before the end of their useful life. So for just $30 you can help nearly 500 prisoners!

By providing a GED study guide and a good dictionary to one prisoner, you are giving him a chance to earn a GED, improve reading skills, find gainful employment upon release and shut the revolving door of crime and prison behind him. The community gains one more productive citizen and saves the cost of housing one more inmate.

Defenders of Wildlife depends on the support of caring people like you to help us pressure the Department of Interior to ensure maximum protection for wolves in the lower 48 states and end the horrific practice of aerial gunning in Alaska. Defenders also operates the wildly successful Wolf Compensation Trust, which reimburses ranchers at fair market value for verified losses of livestock to wolves. This program has been credited with increasing tolerance and acceptance of predators among ranchers and farmers throughout the American West. Your gift to Adopt A Wolf will help Defenders save wolves and other imperiled wildlife.
