Overview

Founded in 1944, Heifer International is a humanitarian assistance and sustainable development organization working to end world hunger and protect the Earth. Through livestock, training, and "Passing on the Gift," Heifer has helped seven million families in more than 125 countries improve their quality of live and move toward greater self-reliance.

Mission

To end hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.

Program

As Heifer's impact spreads around the world, our holistic approach continually evolves to meet the unique challenges of individual communities. When communities come together and ask for Heifer's assistance, we respond with training and education, livestock and seeds. Heifer helps communities build the foundation to lift families from poverty to self-reliance. Heifer is able to make sustainable impacts through by focusing on training and education for agroecology, animal well-being, gender equity, HIV/AIDS, microenterprise, urban agriculture and young people. Every day, Heifer helps build a world where small farmers provide their families with nutritious meals and where impoverished mothers can better afford adequate housing, medical care and school fees for their children.

Impact

Since 1944 Heifer has helped more than 38 million struggling people in 125 countries become self-reliant through gifts of livestock and education. As the cornerstone of Heifer's work, each family that receives is required to be a part of the giving by passing on the first offspring to another family in need. This result in an incredible ROI for donors; for each animal placed, it is passed on an average of 6 times.

So your starter flock of 10 to 50 chicks will provide plenty of protein-rich eggs to eat, to sell at the market for income, or to pass on the gift to other families in need. And because chickends need very little space and thrive on readily available feed or pests like insects,...

Share of a Llama

Heifer Project International Inc

Regular price $20.00

Llamas and alpacas have special hooves that do not damage the fragile ecosystem--helping communities preserve what little resources are available. Trees have many functions on small family farms. Their roots hold precious top soil in place, and the branches of some varieties provide vitamin-laden fruit--a ready source of both nutrition and income. And in regions where cooking is still done with firewood, families with trees can use fallen branches instead of purchasing or poaching from forest reserves.
