just keep livin Foundation

Overview

The just keep livin Foundation was founded by Camila and Matthew McConaughey with the mission to empower high school students by providing them with the tools to lead active lives and make healthy choices for a better future.

Mission

We implement after school fitness programs in 33 inner city high schools/sites. In our programs, we encourage students to make positive life choices that improve their physical and mental health through exercise, teamwork, gratitude, nutrition, and community service. Participating students have a safe place to enhance their lives with fitness coaches and health experts. The results have been incredible. Participants get in shape and gain confidence while also improving their grades, attendance and behavior. Friendships are built and fears are overcome. At our j.k. livin after school programs, kids learn self-reliance and get a healthy start today, so they can make a better tomorrow.

History

The just keep livin Foundation was founded by Matthew and Camila McConaughey in 2008 and is dedicated to empowering high school students by providing them with the tools to lead active lives and make healthy choices for a better future. After the birth of the McConaugheys' first son Levi, Camila and Matthew knew they wanted to start a foundation aimed at helping kids specifically, kids that were at that pivotal age in life where, if they receive the proper support and guidance, they're able to continue on the right path.

The name of the Foundation comes from when Matthew was filming Dazed and Confused and his father passed away suddenly. He was trying to make sense of it all and it was during that time that he recalled a saying that his dad used to use: “just keep livin.† As life continued forward, Matthew found that the “just keep livin† approach helped him navigate through the good times and bad times, stay true to his ideals, and make the best out of life. When he started this foundation, naming it “just keep livin† was a natural fit. It captured so many aspects of how health and well-being applied to his life. He decided to include the last photo taken of his father, “Pop,† on the logo in remembrance of the saying's origin. The just keep livin foundation is based on the idea that part of living is about giving back. In addition to creating things you love with the people you love, Matthew firmly believes in helping others and in being a good neighbor.

Program

What we do:

We provide FREE after-school fitness/wellness programs in Title 1 high schools where it is needed the most.

Our goal is really “TO PREVENT SO WE DON'T HAVE TO CURE LATER IN LIFE† and that starts with introducing and changing these kids HABITS before it's too late and giving them the skills and tools they can use throughout their lifetime.

We offer an all-inclusive approach to help our students, through a curriculum that we created with Scholastic, it helps HS students CHANGE their HABITS so they're better prepared for their future through:

o Nutrition

o Fitness

o Community Service (2 service events required per semester)

o Goal Setting

o Gratitude
