Overview

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) is dedicated to providing housing, employment opportunities and a wide range of supportive services to help veterans in crisis achieve an optimum level of self sufficiency and emotional well-being. NCHV works closely with the nation's service providers, local governments, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Labor, and the U.S. Congress to develop and support effective programs to help homeless veterans re-enter society as productive citizens.

Mission

To end homelessness among veterans by shaping public policy; promoting collaboration between government, corporate and private stakeholders to implement effective intervention strategies; and building the capacity of service providers assisting homeless and at-risk veterans.

Program

NCHV is the resource and technical assistance center for a national network of 250 community-based service and care agencies that provide emergency and supportive housing, food, health services, job training and placement assistance, legal aid and case management support for more than 150,000 homeless veterans and their families each year. The organization provides technical assistance and resource informartion to another 2,400 organizations that offer assistance to veterans in crisis.

NCHV also serves as the primary liaison between these care providers, Congress and the Executive Branch agencies charged with helping them succeed in their work. NCHV offers service providers assistance with administrative organization, program development, applications for grants, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and communications with the nation’s service provider network. NCHV operates a toll-free homeless veterans assistance phone line and a comprehensive website to direct veterans who need help to the people who can provide it.

Impact

Through its programs and partnerships with federal agencies and local service provider networks, NCHV has helped reduce the number of homeless veterans by 25% in the last five years. NCHV is currently engaged in developing early intervention strategies and homelessness prevention policies to better serve a new generation of wartime veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
